Knowledge for All

____

Elbert and Patrick are artisans, their manufacturing businesses are their lively-hoods. They work for the community, they continue playing music in the tenement yards in their leisure. They care for others, they take pride and ownership in their work; and their common life and their history are primary to their being. They have been victims of gang intimidation, they have moved, they have returned, they have survived through hurricanes, political riots, and food shortages, but their sense of place is deeply fixed.

Culture

Jamaica's dynamic culture has a profound global impact. From European colonization, Rastafarians, intra-ethnic conflict,  and political upheavals, the history of Jamaica created a vibrant home to the world's most strong-willed population.

Art, similar to music, depicts the grit, spiritual atmosphere of Trench Town. Aside from creating groundbreaking sounds or dancing under the warm sun, many residents part-take in sculpting, painting, and pottery.

"All architecture is shelter, all great architecture is the design of space that contains, cuddles, exalts, or stimulates the persons in that space." Philip Johnson

The cradle of reggae music and the nucleus for many of Marley’s early creative works, Trench Town has opened its doors to those who wish to learn about the birth of Jamaican music and its continuing influence in the international space. Trench Town Culture, located at 6 and 8 Lower First Street, in Trench Town is where Marley spent much of his early music career. The “Yard” is now a historical site and cultural museum. Several displays can be found there including articles, furnishings and instruments used in the early years by Marley, and members of the Wailers band, including Peter Tosh. Tour guides will help to take you on an incredible journey to understand the history of Trench Town and reggae music. -https://www.visitjamaica.com/listing/trench-town-culture-yard/62/
